Case IH E – Electronic Hitch Control (EHC) module: Too high battery voltage

Issue description

Battery voltage exceeding 19 volts, causing the electronic hitch controls to automatically shut down to protect the internal circuitry from damage.

Check the cause

  1. Test the charging system: Use a multimeter to test the tractor's battery circuit output while the engine is running to see if the alternator is overcharging the system (producing >19 volts).

  2. Inspect wiring: If the alternator output is within normal ranges (typically 13.5V - 14.5V), inspect the wiring harness leading to the Electronic Hitch Control module for shorts to a higher voltage source or damaged wiring protector tubes.

  3. Check grounds: Verify that the ground connections for the cab and the hitch controller are clean and secure, as a floating ground can sometimes cause voltage misreadings.

Repair steps

  1. Measure Voltage

    Start the tractor and use a multimeter to measure the voltage across the battery terminals.

  2. Diagnose the Alternator

    If the voltage reads above 19 volts, the alternator's internal voltage regulator has failed, causing a severe overcharge condition.

  3. Replace the Alternator

    Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the serpentine/drive belt, disconnect the electrical connections (B+, D+, B-, W studs) from the back of the alternator, and unbolt the unit. Install the new alternator (transferring the pulley if the new unit is supplied without one) and tension the belt to spec.

  4. Harness Repair (If Applicable)

    If the alternator was not overcharging, trace the console and rear hitch wiring harnesses. Repair any chafed wires or shorts that are feeding incorrect voltage to the EHC module.

  5. Clear and Verify

    Reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and verify that the charging voltage is stable (around 14V). The "E" code should clear from the hitch display, and the electronic hitch controls will exit shutdown mode and resume normal operation.
