Case IH EHR4154 – ARM: Rear Remote No.4 Spool Not Neutral

Issue description

The control system has detected that the spool valve for the fourth hydraulic remote has failed to return to its central, or neutral, position after an operation. When the spool fails to return to neutral, hydraulic pressure may remain applied to the implement, preventing proper operation and potentially causing all hydraulic functions to lock up until the tractor is restarted.

Applies to these machines

  • Puma 140
  • Puma 160
  • Puma 165
  • Puma 260
  • Puma 290
  • Optum 270 CVT
  • Optum 300 CVT
  • Magnum Series
  • Steiger Series
  • Quadtrac Series

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the remote valve couplers and levers for any dirt, ice, or physical obstruction that could prevent mechanical movement

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the #4 remote valve for worn insulation, chafing, and corrosion (pay close attention to the articulation area on Quadtracs)

  3. Swap the hydraulic hoses to a different remote valve to determine if the issue is with the implement (e.g., high return pressure) or the tractor's valve

  4. Listen for an audible 'click' from both solenoids on remote #4 when the lever is activated

  5. Unplug the solenoids on remote #4 one by one; if unplugging a solenoid allows the spool to return to neutral, that solenoid is likely faulty or receiving a constant voltage signal

  6. If experiencing faults on multiple remotes, unplug all remote solenoids and plug them back in one by one to isolate a potentially shorted solenoid

  7. Check for a stuck spool caused by a broken centering spring, a contaminated valve, or a warped spool if electrical checks do not reveal the issue

  8. Check the hydraulic fluid for signs of contamination, such as a milky appearance (water) or metal shavings in the filters, which can cause valves to stick mechanically

Repair steps

  1. Replace faulty solenoid

If electrical diagnostics point to a faulty solenoid, relieve all hydraulic pressure by shutting down the tractor and cycling the remote levers. Unplug the electrical connector, unscrew the solenoid from the valve body (be prepared for a small amount of residual hydraulic oil to leak), and install the new solenoid. Ensure O-rings are correctly seated and lubricated with clean hydraulic fluid before reconnecting and testing.

  2. Remove and disassemble valve section

If electrical checks pass and a stuck spool or broken centering spring is suspected, relieve hydraulic pressure and remove the specific valve slice/section for remote #4. Carefully disassemble the valve on a clean workbench, noting the order and orientation of the spool, springs, poppets, and seals.

  3. Inspect and clean internal components

Inspect the spool for scoring or binding and clean all components with a suitable solvent. Inspect the centering spring(s) for damage or breakage.

  4. Replace seals and reassemble

Replace any worn seals, O-rings, or broken springs using a seal kit. Reassemble the valve, ensuring all components are clean, and torque to manufacturer specifications. Reinstall the valve section, reconnect lines/connectors, and calibrate using a diagnostic tool if required.
