Case IH ENG254 – ECU: Fuel Shutoff Valve Voltage Too Low
Issue description
The engine control system has detected that the voltage supplied to the electrical circuit for the fuel shutoff valve (solenoid) is lower than normal. This valve controls the flow of fuel to the engine and is responsible for cutting the fuel supply to stop the engine when the ignition is turned off. A low voltage condition can prevent the solenoid from opening correctly, which may result in the engine failing to start or stalling during operation.

Check the cause
Carefully inspect the fuel shutoff solenoid and its wiring for any visible signs of damage, such as cracked connectors, frayed wires, or corrosion. Also, check for any fuel leaks around the solenoid.
Ensure that all electrical connectors to the fuel shutoff solenoid are securely fastened. A loose connection at the tractor harness plug is a known issue. Also, verify that the solenoid itself is securely mounted.
Use a multimeter or a 12-volt test light to confirm that the solenoid is receiving power. With the ignition key in the 'on' position (without starting the engine), check for voltage at the solenoid's electrical connector. For a three-wire solenoid, as found on some Magnum tractors, two of the three wires should show power when the key is on. The third wire is the ground.
When the ignition is turned on, a functioning solenoid should produce an audible 'click' as the internal plunger moves to open the fuel valve. If no click is heard, it could indicate a faulty solenoid or a lack of power.
A poor ground connection can cause a voltage drop. Ensure the solenoid's ground wire has a clean and secure connection to the chassis. You can use a multimeter to check for continuity between the ground wire and the frame.
Check the fuse box for any blown fuses related to the engine control or fuel systems. The fuel shutoff solenoid circuit may also include a relay that should be inspected. On some Magnum tractors, the 'hold in' winding of the solenoid is powered by the cab power solenoid.
Repair steps
Disconnect battery
Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery before beginning any electrical work to ensure safety.
Locate the solenoid
Find the fuel shutoff solenoid, which is typically located on the fuel injection pump or in the fuel line near the engine.
Disconnect wiring and fuel lines
Carefully label and disconnect the electrical wires from the old solenoid. If necessary, disconnect the fuel lines connected to the valve. Be prepared to catch any fuel spillage.
Remove old solenoid
Unscrew and remove the old fuel shutoff solenoid from its mounting point.
Install new solenoid
Screw the new solenoid into place, ensuring a tight seal. Use a fuel-resistant sealant or Teflon tape on the threads if necessary.
Reconnect lines and wiring
Reconnect the fuel lines and the electrical wires according to the labels made during removal.
Reconnect battery
Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
Test the system
Start the engine and check for proper operation. Turn the ignition off to ensure the engine shuts down correctly.
