ENG255

Case IH ENG255 – ENG: Fuel Shutoff Valve Voltage Too High

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected that the voltage supplied to the fuel shutoff valve circuit is higher than the expected range. The fuel shutoff solenoid is an essential component that controls the flow of fuel to the engine, opening when energized and closing when de-energized. High voltage in this circuit indicates a potential issue with the electrical supply, the solenoid itself, or the ECU, which may affect the proper operation of the valve and could lead to unintended fuel flow or system malfunctions.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the fuel shutoff solenoid and its wiring harness for physical damage, corrosion, or frayed wires. Ensure all connectors are clean and securely fastened.

  2. Turn the ignition to the 'on' position (without starting the engine) and listen for an audible 'click' from the solenoid. The absence of this sound indicates a problem.

  3. Use a multimeter to test the voltage at the fuel shutoff solenoid's electrical connector with the ignition on. A reading significantly higher than the specified system voltage points to an electrical fault.

  4. Inspect the ground wire from the solenoid to ensure it has a clean and secure connection to the chassis.

  5. Disconnect the solenoid and measure the resistance across its terminals using a multimeter. An infinite reading suggests an open circuit within the coil, while a near-zero reading indicates a short circuit.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect the battery

Before beginning any electrical repairs, disconnect the negative terminal of the battery to prevent electrical shock or damage to components.

  2. Address wiring and connector issues

If diagnostic checks revealed any damaged wiring or corroded connectors, repair or replace them as necessary. Ensure all connections are clean and tight.

  3. Test the solenoid directly

If the wiring appears to be in good condition, test the solenoid by applying direct voltage from a battery to its terminals. If the solenoid plunger does not move when power is applied, the solenoid is likely faulty.

  4. Replace the fuel shutoff solenoid

If the solenoid is determined to be faulty, unscrew the old solenoid from the fuel injection pump or fuel line (be prepared for some fuel spillage). Install the new solenoid, ensuring a tight seal.

  5. Clear fault codes and verify repair

After completing the repairs, reconnect the battery and clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool. Start the engine and operate the equipment to ensure that the problem has been resolved and the ENG 255 fault code does not reappear.
