ENG273

Case IH ENG273 – ECU: Rear Pumping Control Valve Current Is Low During Click Test

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected an open circuit or abnormally low current on the rear pumping control valve return circuit (specifically Pin 15) during its diagnostic 'click test'. The rear pumping control valve is a critical component of the CAPS (Cummins Accumulator Pump System) fuel pump, responsible for pumping fuel into the accumulator and maintaining desired fuel pressure.

Applies to these machines

  • 7110
  • 8930
  • MX215
  • MX240
  • MX255
  • MX270
  • MX285
  • MX305
  • MX Series
  • TG Series

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors associated with the fuel injection pump and rear pumping control valve for damage, corrosion, or loose connections

  2. Check for an open circuit or high resistance in the wiring between the ECU and the rear pumping control valve

  3. Test the rear pumping control valve solenoid to ensure it is functioning correctly

Repair steps

  1. Visual Inspection

Carefully inspect the wiring harness and connectors associated with the fuel injection pump and the rear pumping control valve. Look for any signs of damage, corrosion, or loose connections.

  2. Check Circuit Integrity

Use a digital multimeter to check for continuity and resistance in the wiring between the ECU and the rear pumping control valve. For MX240 models, specifically check for an open circuit at pin A15 of the engine controller.

  3. Test Valve Solenoid

Measure the resistance of the rear pumping control valve solenoid coil and compare it to the manufacturer's specifications to determine if the solenoid is faulty.

Parts you might need

(8)
  • Fuel Injection Pump Assembly

    504188076R

Remanufactured fuel injection pump. The rear pumping control valve is likely a part of this assembly. Verify by serial number.

  • Verify fitment by serial number.

  • Fits MX240, MX255, MX270, MX285 models. Less likely to be the direct cause but can affect the overall fuel system.

  • Fits 8.3L and 8.9L CAPS injection pumps. This module houses both the front and rear pumping control valves.

  • CAPS Accumulator Module

    4025319

Alternative part number for CAPS Accumulator Module.

  • CAPS Fuel Injection Pump (Complete Assembly)

    4076441RX

Exact part number depends on the specific engine CPL/application. Required if the pump housing or gear pump has also failed.

  • CAPS Fuel Injection Pump (Complete Assembly)

    4076442RX

Exact part number depends on the specific engine CPL/application. Required if the pump housing or gear pump has also failed.

  • CAPS Fuel Injection Pump (Complete Assembly)

    4076443RX

Exact part number depends on the specific engine CPL/application. Required if the pump housing or gear pump has also failed.
