ENG274

Case IH ENG274 – ENG: Rear Pumping Control Valve Current Is High

Issue description

This code indicates a short circuit condition (current too high) in the circuit for the Rear Pumping Control Valve. The Rear Pumping Control Valve is a critical component of the CAPS (Cummins Accumulator Pump System) fuel injection pump, responsible for controlling the pressure in the accumulator by regulating fuel pumped by the rear pumping element.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum Series
  • MX240
  • TG Series
  • Magnum Series
  • Magnum 215
  • Magnum 245
  • Magnum 275
  • Magnum 305
  • Magnum 335

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the fuel injection pump and the rear pumping control valve for chafing, melting, or corrosion on the connectors

  2. Perform a 'click test' using the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to activate the valve. A successful click indicates the valve is functional (pointing to intermittent wiring), while no click suggests a coil or wiring problem

  3. Trace the wire from pin A15 of the engine controller to the rear pumping control valve. Check for continuity and any shorts to ground or power

  4. Test the internal coil of the rear pumping control valve for a short circuit if the wiring is intact

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

Disconnect the battery before beginning any electrical repairs.

  2. Access the Component

Locate the rear pumping control valve on the fuel injection pump.

  3. Disconnect and Test

Disconnect the electrical connector from the valve. This will allow for testing of both the valve and the harness side of the circuit independently.

  4. Replace the Faulty Component

If the valve is determined to be faulty, it will need to be replaced. Given the precision nature of fuel system components, it is crucial to maintain cleanliness during the replacement to avoid contaminating the fuel system.

  5. Clear Codes and Verify

After replacing the component, reconnect the battery, clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool or the tractor's onboard diagnostics, and operate the machine to ensure the fault does not return.
