ENG278

Case IH ENG278 – ECM: Fuel Lift Pump is Failed

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected a malfunction in the fuel lift pump. The lift pump is responsible for transferring fuel from the tank to the main high-pressure injection pump. A failure in this component results in insufficient fuel delivery, which can cause reduced engine power, poor performance, or complete engine shutdown.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum Series
  • MX Series
  • MX180
  • MX230
  • MX240
  • MX255
  • MX270
  • MX285
  • TG Series
  • 2366
  • 2377
  • 2388
  • 3220
  • 4210
  • 585
  • 895

Check the cause

  1. Confirm the presence of other related fault codes (e.g., ENG 329 for over-pumping failure), which can indicate a plugged fuel filter or restricted fuel line rather than a failed pump

  2. Check the fuel filters for clogs, as a restricted filter is a common cause of fuel delivery problems and can mimic pump failure

  3. Inspect all fuel lines for kinks, cracks, or visible leaks

  4. For electric lift pumps, check the fuel pump relay and fuse to ensure they are functioning correctly

  5. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the ECM and the fuel lift pump for broken wires, corroded, or pushed-back pins (particularly at the ECM connector)

  6. With the electric pump running, check the voltage at the pump's electrical connector (should be over 12 volts)

  7. Perform a fuel flow test on electric pumps: turn ignition to 'ON', listen for the pump running, and disconnect the fuel line at the injection pump to verify fuel is being pumped out

  8. Perform a gear pump pressure test: connect a 200 psi gauge to the gear pump pressure port. Pressure should not drop below 75 psi under full load (drops indicate a fuel restriction or failing lift pump)

  9. Perform a vacuum test on the fuel system to check for air leaks. The system should hold a vacuum for at least 5 minutes

Repair steps

  1. Ensure safety

Always work in a well-ventilated area, away from sparks or open flames. Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting work on the fuel system.

  2. Electric Pump: Disconnect battery

    Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  3. Electric Pump: Drain tank (if applicable)

If the pump is located inside the fuel tank, the tank may need to be drained.

  4. Electric Pump: Access assembly

Gain access to the fuel pump assembly.

  5. Electric Pump: Disconnect connections

Carefully disconnect the electrical connector and the fuel lines from the pump.

  6. Electric Pump: Remove pump

Remove the bolts or retaining mechanism securing the pump module and remove it.

  7. Electric Pump: Install new pump

Install the new fuel pump module, ensuring a proper seal.

  8. Electric Pump: Reconnect lines and wiring

Reconnect the fuel lines and electrical connector.

  9. Electric Pump: Reassemble

Reinstall any access panels or the fuel tank.

  10. Electric Pump: Reconnect battery

    Reconnect the negative battery cable.

  11. Electric Pump: Prime and test

Turn the ignition key to the 'on' position for a few seconds to prime the system, then start the engine and check thoroughly for any leaks.

  12. Mechanical Pump: Disconnect lines

Disconnect the fuel lines from the pump. Have a container ready to catch spilled fuel.

  13. Mechanical Pump: Remove bolts

Remove the mounting bolts that secure the fuel pump to the engine block.

  14. Mechanical Pump: Remove and clean

Remove the old pump and clean the mounting surface.

  15. Mechanical Pump: Install new pump

Install the new pump, ensuring any pushrod is correctly positioned, and tighten the mounting bolts to the specified torque.

  16. Mechanical Pump: Reconnect lines

Connect the fuel lines, using new clamps if necessary.

  17. Mechanical Pump: Test

Start the engine and check for any fuel leaks.
