ENG415

Case IH ENG415 – ECM: Critically Low Engine Oil Pressure

Issue description

The engine oil pressure has dropped below a dangerously low threshold (the very low warning limit). This is a critical warning for the engine's lubrication system, indicating a condition that could compromise engine lubrication and lead to severe engine damage if not addressed promptly.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • TG Series
  • MX240
  • Magnum 215
  • Magnum 235
  • Magnum 245
  • Magnum 275
  • Magnum 305
  • Magnum 340

Check the cause

  1. Check engine oil level on the dipstick after the machine has been shut down and allowed to settle.

  2. Inspect the engine oil for incorrect viscosity or contamination (e.g., fuel or coolant).

  3. Verify actual oil pressure by connecting a reliable mechanical pressure gauge to the sensor port and comparing readings at low idle and operating RPM to OEM specifications.

  4. Visually inspect the oil pressure sensor for oil leakage from its body or wicking into the electrical connector.

  5. Inspect the sensor wiring harness for chafing, corrosion, or loose connections.

  6. Perform a multimeter test on the sensor/switch (check for continuity to ground for a simple switch, or verify 5V reference, ground, and signal voltage for a three-wire sensor).

Repair steps

  1. Address internal mechanical failure

If the mechanical gauge confirms low oil pressure (mechanical issue): Do not replace the sensor. Inspect the internal lubrication system starting with the oil pump, pickup tube, pressure relief valve, and engine bearing clearances following the OEM service manual.

  2. Repair wiring harness

If mechanical pressure is good (sensor circuit fault): Repair or replace any damaged, chafed, or corroded sections of the wiring harness. Ensure all connections are clean and secure before re-testing.

  3. Replace oil pressure sensor/switch

If mechanical pressure is good but the sensor is leaking or fails multimeter tests: Disconnect the negative battery terminal and the electrical connector. Remove the old sensor, apply suitable thread sealant, and install the new sensor to the manufacturer's specified torque. Reconnect the electrical connector and battery, start the engine, verify the fault code clears, and check for leaks around the new sensor.
