ENG551

Case IH ENG551 – ECM: Hand Throttle Idle Validation Switches Open

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected that both hand throttle idle validation switches are in the open position simultaneously. This prevents the ECM from verifying the hand throttle's position during idle conditions. As a safety precaution, this conflicting information typically forces the engine to remain at idle.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Maxxum 100
  • Maxxum 110
  • Maxxum 115
  • Maxxum 125
  • Maxxum 140
  • Maxxum 5130
  • MXU

Check the cause

  1. Check for other active throttle-related fault codes (such as ARM 1109) that may help pinpoint the root cause

  2. Visually inspect the hand throttle assembly, lever, cables, and wiring for damage, corrosion, or loose connections

  3. Test the idle validation switches for continuity using a multimeter; they should change state when the throttle moves in and out of the idle position

  4. Test the throttle potentiometer by measuring resistance between the outer terminals (should be constant) and between one outer terminal and the center wiper (should change smoothly without dropouts as the throttle moves)

Repair steps

  1. Address related fault codes

Diagnose and repair any other active throttle-related fault codes before proceeding.

  2. Repair wiring

Repair or replace any damaged wires or corroded connectors found during the visual inspection.

  3. Replace faulty components

If diagnostic tests fail, replace the faulty potentiometer, idle validation switch, or the complete hand throttle control assembly.

  4. Calibrate throttle control

Turn ignition ON (engine OFF). Smoothly move the hand throttle from idle to full-throttle and back 2-3 times. Turn ignition OFF and wait at least 30 seconds. Start the engine and allow it to idle to confirm the repair.

  5. Clear Fault Codes

Use a diagnostic tool to clear the ENG 551 fault code from the ECM.

  6. Verify the Repair

Operate the tractor and ensure that the hand throttle functions correctly and the fault code does not reappear.
