ENG596

Case IH ENG596 – ECM: Battery Voltage is Too High

Issue description

The system has detected that the battery voltage is higher than the acceptable range, typically exceeding 15 volts. This condition indicates an issue with the power supply or the voltage regulation of the charging system, resulting in the battery receiving excessive voltage (overcharging).

Check the cause

  1. Verify the fault code ENG596 using the onboard diagnostic menu and note any other active codes.

  2. Check battery terminals and ground connections to ensure they are clean, tight, and free of corrosion, as poor grounds can impede current flow and cause charging issues.

  3. Inspect battery cables for any signs of damage or corrosion.

  4. Measure alternator output voltage across the battery terminals with the engine idling (normal is 13.8-14.5V; consistently above 14.5-15V indicates overcharging).

  5. Ensure no external, higher-voltage power source has been accidentally connected to the battery's positive wiring.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

For safety, always disconnect the negative battery terminal before beginning any repair work on the electrical system.

  2. Replace voltage regulator (if applicable)

If the tractor uses an externally mounted voltage regulator (common on older models), locate it, disconnect its wiring, unbolt it, and install the new regulator ensuring all electrical connections are secure.

  3. Replace alternator

If the voltage regulator is integrated into the alternator, replace the entire assembly. Loosen the serpentine belt tensioner, remove the belt, disconnect electrical connectors and the main power cable, remove mounting bolts, install the new alternator, torque bolts to spec, and reinstall the belt.

  4. Perform final system check

Reconnect the negative battery terminal, start the engine, and re-test the charging voltage at the battery to confirm it is within the normal 13.8V - 14.5V range. Clear fault codes using the tractor's diagnostic system or a service tool.
