F-103-02 - ECU

Case IH F-103-02 - ECU – Engine ECU: Turbo acceleration higher than expected

Issue description

This code indicates that the turbocharger's rotational speed is accelerating at a rate that exceeds the expected parameters programmed into the engine control software. This can be caused by erratic sensor readings, an issue with the Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) actuator, or abnormal exhaust/intake pressures.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Case IH 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines (7240, 8240, 9240)
  • Case IH Magnum Tractors (250, 280, 310, 340, 370, 380)
  • Case IH Austoft 9900 sugarcane harvesters

Check the cause

  1. Verify the diagnostic code F-103-02 (or SPN/DTC 3642) is active using a diagnostic tool.

  2. Inspect the turbocharger speed sensor and its wiring harness for shorts, opens, or erratic signals.

  3. Check the electronic Variable Geometry Turbocharger (eVGT) actuator for CAN communication errors with the ECU.

  4. Inspect the intake and exhaust systems for over-boost conditions, exhaust pressure controller deviations, or leaks.

  5. Verify high-pressure pump fuel delivery quantity to ensure over-fueling is not causing rapid, unexpected turbo acceleration.

Repair steps

  1. Safely Shut Down

Ensure the machine is parked, the engine is off, and the battery is disconnected before servicing engine sensors.

  2. Harness & Connector Repair

Disconnect the turbo speed sensor. Inspect the pins for corrosion or damage. If the wiring harness is damaged, repair or replace the affected section.

  3. Sensor Replacement

If the wiring is intact but the sensor is providing erratic readings, remove the turbo speed sensor from the turbocharger compressor housing and install a new OEM sensor.

  4. Turbocharger Inspection

Remove the intake piping to access the turbocharger compressor wheel. Check for excessive shaft play, bearing failure, or wheel damage. If the turbocharger bearings are failing or the VGT vanes are sticking, the entire turbocharger or the VGT actuator must be replaced.

  5. Reassembly and Testing

Reconnect all piping and harnesses. Clear the fault codes using the diagnostic tool. Run the engine and command it to maximum speed to verify that the turbo acceleration is within normal parameters and the code does not return.
