Case IH F-103-16 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Engine Control Module (ECM): Turbine over speed detected

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected that the turbocharger's turbine shaft is spinning faster than the maximum programmed threshold (often exceeding 130,000 RPM on heavy-duty diesel engines). This condition is dangerous for the engine and turbocharger, and the ECM will typically trigger an engine power derate to protect the mechanical components from catastrophic failure.

Check the cause

  1. Check for Charge Air / Boost Leaks: A blown charge air cooler (CAC) hose blowing off under load is a primary cause. The loss of pressure causes the turbocharger to temporarily over-speed to compensate.

  2. Inspect the Turbocharger Speed Sensor: The sensor is a Hall effect/variable reluctance sensor mounted in the compressor inlet. Check the sensor's resistance; it should typically measure between 600–1200 ohms across its two wires.

  3. Inspect Wiring and Connectors: Disconnect the turbo speed sensor and check the harness side for corrosion, pushed pins, or wire chafing that could cause a short circuit or erratic voltage.

  4. Check the VGT Actuator / Wastegate: Inspect the Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) actuator linkage or wastegate. If the linkage is stuck closed, it can force the turbine to over-speed.

  5. Check the Air Filter: Ensure the engine air filter is not severely restricted or clogged, which can alter intake pressure dynamics.

Repair steps

  1. Visual Inspection

    Perform a thorough visual inspection of all intake piping, charge air cooler hoses, and clamps. Reconnect and tighten, or replace, any blown or leaking hoses.

  2. Sensor Testing

    Turn the ignition OFF. Disconnect the turbocharger speed sensor. Use a multimeter to test the sensor's resistance. If it falls outside the 600–1200 ohm range, or if the sensor is physically damaged by debris, replace the sensor.

  3. Harness Repair

    If the sensor tests good, check the 5-volt supply and return circuits from the ECM. Repair any damaged wiring in the engine harness.

  4. Actuator/Linkage Freeing

    If the VGT linkage or wastegate is stuck, attempt to manually free the linkage. Check for full range of motion and excessive wear. If the actuator has failed mechanically or electrically, replace the actuator.

  5. Turbocharger Replacement

    If the sensor, wiring, and hoses are intact, but the turbocharger exhibits excessive shaft play, physical damage to the compressor wheel, or internal mechanical failure causing the over-speed, the entire turbocharger assembly must be replaced.

  6. Clear Codes

    Connect the diagnostic tool (e.g., CNH Electronic Service Tool), clear the inactive fault codes, and test run the machine under load to verify the repair.
