Case IH F-103-31 - ECU – ECU: Turbine irreversible over speed detected

The turbocharger turbine has exceeded its maximum allowable operating speed limit. Because the overspeed is flagged as 'irreversible,' the system assumes the turbocharger has sustained structural compromise or internal damage, posing a high risk of catastrophic engine failure.

   Note system derate/shutdown behaviors, as the ECU will automatically reduce the engine to low idle or force a shutdown.

   If full power loss is experienced, emergency re-starts are available for exactly 30 seconds of operation before forcing back to low idle.

   Inspect the turbocharger for physical damage, including excessive shaft play and damage to the compressor or turbine wheels.

   Ensure no debris has entered the Charge Air Cooler (CAC) or intake piping.

   Check related systems that could cause a runaway turbo, such as wastegate/VGT actuator failures, intake leaks, or exhaust restrictions.

   Drain coolant

   Drain the engine cooling fluid.

   Remove tank and hoses

   Remove the deaeration tank and radiator hoses.

   Disconnect air lines

   Disconnect the aftercooler air supply and return lines/tubes.

   Remove DEF hose bundle

   Remove the DEF hose bundle connected to the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) exhaust treatment system.

   Disconnect turbocharger

   Disconnect the turbocharger from the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC).

   Remove turbocharger

   Remove the damaged turbocharger assembly.

   Install replacement turbocharger

   Install the replacement turbocharger and reassemble all air, coolant, and exhaust lines.

   Refill coolant and clear codes

   Refill the engine coolant and clear the ECU fault codes using the dealer diagnostic tool.
