Case IH F-1072-03 - ECU – Engine Control Module (ECM / ECU): Engine Compression Brake Output #1 – Voltage Above Normal, or Shorted to High Source
Issue description
The engine's control system has detected high voltage or a short circuit to a power source on the signal circuit for engine brake solenoid number 1. When this occurs, the engine brake actuator cannot be controlled properly, resulting in reduced or completely disabled engine braking performance.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness connecting the ECM to the engine brake solenoid. Pay special attention to the jumper harness located under the valve cover and the engine brake pass-through connectors on the rocker lever housing.
Disconnect the engine brake solenoid and use a multimeter to check the signal wire for a short to battery (voltage present when the circuit should be dead).
Measure the resistance across the pins of engine brake solenoid #1. Compare the reading to OEM specifications to determine if the solenoid has an internal short.
Inspect the ECM connector pins for corrosion, bent pins, or moisture intrusion, which can bridge circuits and cause a false 'short to battery' reading.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.
Gain Access
Remove the engine valve cover to access the engine brake solenoids and internal jumper harness. (Note: On some specific engine models, you may need to remove a plug and sealing washer from the solenoid housing to access water pipe locations).
Repair Wiring (If Applicable)
If the diagnostic checks revealed chafed wires or a melted pass-through connector shorting to voltage, splice in a new section of wiring or replace the internal jumper harness.
Replace Solenoid (If Applicable)
If the solenoid failed the resistance test, unbolt the faulty engine brake solenoid #1 from the rocker assembly and install the replacement unit. Torque the mounting bolts to the engine manufacturer's exact specifications.
Reassembly
Clean the mating surfaces and install a new valve cover gasket. Reinstall the valve cover.
Clear and Verify
Reconnect the battery, connect a diagnostic scan tool, and clear the inactive F-1072-03 fault code. Start the machine, bring it to operating temperature, and test the engine brake under load to verify the repair.
