F-1073-05 - ECU

Case IH F-1073-05 - ECU – Engine Control Module (ECM): Engine compression brake low side driver circuit open failure

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected an open circuit or an abnormally low current draw on the circuit that controls the engine compression brake (Jake brake) solenoid/actuator.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Case IH 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines
  • Case IH Steiger & Quadtrac Tractors (e.g., 600, 620)
  • Case IH Magnum Tractors (e.g., 250, 280, 325, 340, 380, 405)
  • Case N-series Tractor Loader Backhoes (TLBs) (Tier 4 Final)

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running from the Engine ECU to the engine compression brake solenoid for obvious signs of damage, chafing, or disconnected lines.

  2. Disconnect the harness at the engine brake solenoid and the ECU. Check for corroded, pushed-back, or bent pins.

  3. Use a multimeter to check the continuity of the low side driver circuit wire between the ECU and the solenoid. Ensure there is no open circuit in the harness.

  4. Measure the resistance across the pins of the engine compression brake solenoid itself. If the reading shows infinite resistance (OL), the internal coil of the solenoid is open.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect power

Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during repair.

  2. Repair wiring

If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire or damaged connector in the low side driver circuit, repair the wiring harness or replace the damaged connector pigtail.

  3. Replace solenoid

If the wiring is intact but the engine compression brake solenoid failed the resistance test, remove the valve cover (if the actuator is internally mounted on the valvetrain) or locate the external solenoid valve. Unbolt the faulty solenoid and install the replacement part.

  4. Reassemble and reconnect

Reconnect all electrical plugs and reassemble any removed engine covers. Reconnect the battery.

  5. Clear codes and test

Use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the F-1073-05 / 3351 fault code from the Engine ECU. Start the engine, bring it to operating temperature, and test the engine compression brake switch to ensure the system engages properly without triggering the code.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Engine Compression Brake Solenoid / Engine Brake Actuator Valve

Ensure you order the specific solenoid for 'Output 2' or the specific cylinder bank indicated if your engine utilizes a multi-stage compression brake harness.
