Case IH F-110-16 - ECU – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine ECU: Engine Coolant Temperature has exceeded the pre-warning threshold
Issue description
The Engine Coolant Temperature has exceeded the pre-warning threshold (data is valid but is above the normal operating range). The system has detected that the engine is running hotter than normal, triggering a pre-warning before reaching the critical shutdown threshold. If the engine protection feature is enabled, the machine may enter a power derate mode to prevent engine damage.

Check the cause
Visual Inspection: Check the engine cooling system for an actual over-temperature condition (look for steam, boiling coolant, or an elevated temperature gauge)
Coolant Level & Leaks: Verify the coolant level in the reservoir and inspect the radiator and hoses for leaks
Airflow Blockage: Inspect the radiator and cooling package for external blockages (chaff, dust, mud) or internal scale buildup
Mechanical Components: Test the thermostat operation to ensure it is not stuck closed, check the water pump, verify fan belt tension, and ensure the cooling fan/fan clutch engages properly
Sensor & Wiring Test: If the engine is genuinely running cool but the code persists (indicating sensor failure), test the coolant temperature sensor's resistance against OEM specifications and inspect the wiring harness and ECM connectors for damage, corrosion, or shorts
Repair steps
Cool Down
Safely shut down the machine and allow the engine to cool completely to avoid burn hazards.
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the battery or external power supply to protect the ECM.
Locate the Sensor
Find the engine coolant temperature sensor, which is typically threaded into the front of the thermostat housing or the cylinder head.
Remove the Sensor
Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the sensor. Place a catch pan underneath to catch any minor coolant loss, then unscrew and remove the faulty sensor.
Install the New Part
Thread the new OEM coolant temperature sensor into the housing and tighten it to the specified torque.
Reconnect
Plug the electrical harness back into the sensor.
Refill Coolant
Top off the engine coolant to replace any fluid lost during the swap.
Clear Codes & Test
Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the F-110-16 fault code. Start the engine and monitor the temperature gauge to verify the repair.
