Case IH F-1116-31 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): ECU internal failure - Injection quantity correction
Issue description
The engine's control module has detected an internal calculation or plausibility error regarding the fuel injection quantity correction. The ECU monitors the injection quantity correction against the basic maximum injection quantity (which is determined by the current engine speed and coolant temperature). When the module's internal logic fails to process or validate this correction factor, it logs this critical internal failure.
Applies to these machines
7 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines
- A9900 series Sugar Cane Harvesters
- A9000 series Sugar Cane Harvesters
- Magnum series tractors
- Puma series tractors
- Farmall series tractors
Check the cause
Scan for secondary codes using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or a compatible diagnostic interface. Check for related fuel system plausibility faults (e.g., SPN 3754 or SPN 3757) which might indicate a broader fuel system issue.
Verify the current software version on the Engine ECU. Because this is an internal calculation error, outdated software can sometimes cause false flags.
Use the diagnostic software to navigate to utility functions and perform an 'Injection Quantity Correction' or 'Injector Compensation' reset/learning procedure to see if the ECU can successfully recalculate the base values.
Repair steps
Clear and Retest
Clear the fault code using the diagnostic tool. Run the engine to operating temperature (if possible) to see if the code returns as an active fault.
Reprogram the ECU
If the code returns, attempt to reflash/reprogram the Engine Control ECU software using the CNH EST tool.
Replace the ECU
If reprogramming fails or the diagnostic tool confirms a hard internal hardware failure (Level 2 EDC Monitoring failure), the ECU cannot be repaired in the field and must be replaced.
Install New Module
Power down the machine and disconnect the battery. Remove the harnesses from the Engine ECU and unbolt the module from its mounting bracket. Install the new ECU.
Program the New ECU
Reconnect the battery and diagnostic tool. Program the new engine control ECU with the correct engine serial number and software payload.
Injector Coding
Perform the injector compensation coding so the new ECU knows the exact flow rates of the installed injectors.
