F-1136-12 - ECU

Case IH F-1136-12 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): ECU temperature sensor error detected

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected an erratic, missing, or out-of-range signal from its internal temperature sensor. This sensor monitors the physical temperature of the ECU's internal circuit board to protect it from overheating.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Magnum AFS Connect series
  • Magnum series (180, 200, 220, 240, 250, 280, 310, 340, 380, 400)
  • Steiger & Quadtrac series (370, 420, 470, 500, 540, 580, 620)
  • Puma series (130 to 240)
  • Optum series (270, 300, 340)

Check the cause

  1. Check Ambient/Physical ECU Temperature: Ensure the area around the ECU has adequate cooling and is not being subjected to extreme radiant heat from the engine or exhaust.

  2. Inspect Wiring and Grounds: Inspect the main ECU harness connectors for corrosion, moisture, or bent pins. Check for poor chassis grounds or fluctuating supply voltage to the ECU.

  3. Live Data Verification: Use a dealer diagnostic tool (like CNH EST) to read the live 'ECU Temperature' data parameter. If the reading shows an impossible value (e.g., -40°C or +150°C when the tractor is cold), the internal sensor has definitively failed.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative terminal of the tractor's battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the ECU

Locate the Engine Control Unit, typically mounted on the side of the engine block (e.g., Iveco/FPT Cursor 9 engines) or on a dedicated bracket near the firewall.

  3. Disconnect Harnesses

Carefully release the locking levers on the large multi-pin wiring harnesses and unplug them from the ECU.

  4. Remove the ECU

Remove the mounting bolts securing the ECU to its bracket and remove the module.

  5. Install Replacement

Mount the new or remanufactured ECU and securely reconnect the wiring harnesses.

  6. Programming

A certified technician must use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to flash the correct software and calibrate the module to the specific tractor's VIN and immobilizer system.
