Case IH F-1136-14 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): ECU temperature sensor 1 is too high
Issue description
The internal temperature of the ECU has exceeded its maximum safe operating threshold (typically > 115°C). This can be caused by severe external environmental heat, internal electrical shorts drawing excessive current through the ECU's power stages (H-bridges), or a hardware failure of the internal LM71 sensor itself.

Check the cause
Physical & Environmental Inspection: Check the physical mounting of the ECU. Ensure it is not mounted incorrectly or missing factory heat shields that protect it from exhaust/turbocharger heat.
Airflow & Cooling: Verify that the ambient temperature around the ECU is within normal limits and that cooling fans are operating. Clear any heavy mud or debris insulating the ECU housing.
Wiring & Actuator Check: Check the engine wiring harness for short circuits. A short circuit to ground or battery on an actuator (such as the fuel metering unit or exhaust flap) can cause the ECU's internal H-bridge drivers to overwork, leading to an internal over-temperature condition.
Hardware Verification: If the ECU is physically cool to the touch but the code is active, the internal LM71 temperature sensor has likely failed (SPI Error).
Repair steps
Cool Down & Clear
Turn off the machine and allow the ECU to cool completely. Clear the fault codes using the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST).
Inspect Heat Shielding
Inspect the area around the ECU. Reinstall or replace any missing heat shields or insulation.
Test Actuator Circuits
Disconnect the ECU harness and use a multimeter to test the resistance of the engine actuators to ensure none are shorted and drawing excessive current through the ECU.
Cross-Test the ECU
Check the ECU operation by swapping it with a known-good EEM/EDC controller if a hardware defect is suspected.
Replace the ECU
If the environment is normal, wiring is intact, and the fault persists (indicating a failed internal sensor or burnt internal board), the ECU hardware is defective and the entire Engine Control Unit must be replaced.
Reprogram
Flash the new ECU with the correct machine software and perform necessary injector calibrations using the dealer service tool.
