F-1240-14 - ECU

Case IH F-1240-14 - ECU – Engine Control Module (ECM / ECU): High pressure pump fuel delivery quantity at low idle is too high

Issue description

The engine's common rail fuel system is detecting an abnormal fuel volume being delivered by the high-pressure pump to maintain target rail pressure at low idle, which typically points to a leak in the high-pressure system, a faulty metering unit, or inefficient pump operation.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines
  • Magnum Series (235–340, Mx210, Mx230, Mx255, Mx285)
  • Puma Series
  • Farmall Series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the high-pressure fuel system for both external and internal leakages.

  2. Test the metering unit (MeUn / MPROP) to verify if it is closing properly (commanded PWM = 100%).

  3. Inspect the electrical wiring harness and connectors to the metering unit for shorts or open circuits.

  4. Test the fuel injectors for internal leakage and tightness.

  5. Ensure the low-pressure fuel tubes (return line from the pump to the tank) are free and unrestricted, and check the zero delivery valve for correct operation.

  6. Perform an injector return flow test by removing the return tube between the fuel rail and main fuel filter, installing a plug in the main filter head, and connecting a flow meter to the injector return line to measure volume at low idle.

Repair steps

  1. Perform Flow Diagnostics

Use the return flow test to determine if the excessive fuel delivery is compensating for leaking injectors or a failing high-pressure pump.

  2. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic checks reveal a wiring fault to the metering unit, repair or replace the damaged harness section.

  3. Replace the Faulty Component

If the metering unit fails to close or regulate properly, replace the Fuel Metering Unit (MPROP). If the flow test shows excessive return from the injectors, replace the faulty fuel injector(s). If the injectors and metering unit are functioning correctly but the pump is inefficient or leaking internally, replace the High-Pressure Fuel Pump.

  4. Reassembly & Testing

Reconnect all fuel lines and ensure they are torqued to spec. Bleed the low-pressure fuel system if required by the specific engine manual.

  5. Clear Codes

Clear the F-1240-14 / 3808 fault code from the ECM using a diagnostic tool and run the engine at low idle to verify the repair.
