Case IH F-1321-03 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Starter relay low side driver circuit short to battery failure
Issue description
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) monitors the control circuit that provides the ground (low side) to energize the starter relay coil. If the ECU detects battery voltage on this low side circuit when it shouldn't be there, or if the driver circuit overheats due to a short, it logs this fault and may prevent the engine from cranking or limit operation to an emergency low-idle state.

Check the cause
Verify that the tractor battery is not currently connected to an external power supply (such as a jump box or high-amperage battery charger).
Check for related active fault code 3403 (DTC 8A22) - 'Starter relay low side ECU driver circuit over temperature failure'.
Locate the starter relay (K-062 or K-005) and use a multimeter to check the internal coil resistance for a dead short.
Test the low-side control wire running from the relay socket back to the ECU for continuity to ground and ensure it is not shorted to a 12V power source.
Inspect the starter solenoid and the charging system for faults that could be back-feeding voltage into the system.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.
Locate the Relay
Open the primary fuse/relay panel (location varies by cab/chassis design) and locate the starter relay.
Replace the Relay
If the relay failed the multimeter resistance test in the diagnostic phase, replace it with a new OEM relay.
Repair Wiring
If the relay tests good, trace the wiring harness from the relay block to the Engine ECU. Look for areas where the harness may have rubbed against the chassis, engine block, or moving parts. Repair any chafed, pinched, or melted wires that are shorting the low-side driver circuit to a 12V source.
Reassemble and Clear Codes
Reinstall the relay, reconnect the battery, and turn the key to the ON position. Use the machine's diagnostic display or a service tool to clear the inactive fault codes.
Test
Attempt to start the engine. If the code immediately returns and all wiring/relays have been proven good, the ECU itself may have suffered an internal failure on the low-side driver circuit and will require replacement or dealer reprogramming.
