Case IH F-1321-06 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU) or Vehicle Control Module (VCM) / BCU (Body Control Unit): Starter relay low side ECU driver circuit over temperature failure

Issue description

The internal driver circuit inside the control module that provides the ground path (the 'low side') to activate the starter relay is overheating. This is almost always caused by excessive current draw on that specific circuit, such as a short to battery voltage in the wiring harness, a failing starter relay coil, or severe voltage drops causing the relay to chatter.

Check the cause

  1. Battery Voltage & Load Test: Ensure the battery is fully charged (~12.5V) and does not drop below 10.5V during cranking. Low voltage causes the starter relay to chatter, which forces the ECU driver to rapidly cycle and overheat.

  2. Test the Starter Relay Coil: Remove the starter relay and test the resistance across the coil pins. If the resistance is out of specification (too low), the relay is drawing excessive amperage and must be replaced.

  3. Inspect the Wiring Harness: Trace the wire from the ECU's low-side driver pin to the starter relay socket. Look for chafing, melted insulation, or areas where the wire might be shorting to ground or battery voltage.

  4. Check Socket Connections: Inspect the relay socket for corrosion, spread pins, or signs of melting. High resistance at the connection can also cause heat buildup.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the battery disconnect switch or remove the negative battery cable to prevent accidental shorts.

  2. Access the Relay Panel

    Locate the main fuse and relay center (location varies by model; often in the right-hand cab console or engine bay electrical box).

  3. Replace the Faulty Relay

    Pull the starter relay. If the socket is damaged from heat, you must splice in a new relay pigtail/socket using heat-shrink butt connectors. Otherwise, apply a small amount of dielectric grease and install the new OEM starter relay.

  4. Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

    If a short was found in the harness during diagnostics, cut out the damaged section of wire and solder/heat-shrink a new section of wire of the same gauge.

  5. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery. Turn the key to the ON position. Use the machine's diagnostic display screen or a dealer service tool (EST) to clear the F-1321-06 / 3403 fault code.

  6. Verify Repair

    Attempt to start the engine. Ensure the starter engages smoothly and verify that the fault code does not return after 30 seconds of operation.
