F-1442-04 - ECU

Case IH F-1442-04 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Fuel Metering Unit Shorted to Ground at High Side

Issue description

The fuel metering unit is shorted to ground at the high side. The control module detects a short circuit to a ground source on the high side of the unit's power stage, which may cause a full power loss or force the engine into an emergency low-idle state.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Magnum AFS Connect series
  • Magnum 400
  • Farmall 40/45/50 CVT
  • Steiger/Magnum 235-340 Series 4
  • 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines
  • A8000 Sugar Cane Harvester
  • A8800 Sugar Cane Harvester

Check the cause

  1. Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to verify if the fault code is currently active

  2. Inspect the wiring harness between the Engine ECU and the fuel metering unit for chafing, melted insulation, or pinched wires that could cause a short to the engine block or chassis ground

  3. Disconnect the fuel metering unit and the ECU connector, then use a multimeter to check for continuity between the high-side pin on the harness and a known good ground (if continuity exists, the harness is shorted)

  4. Check the internal resistance of the fuel metering unit solenoid to determine if the internal coil has shorted to its own housing

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the machine's battery to prevent electrical spikes during the repair.

  2. Access the Pump

Locate the high-pressure fuel pump on the engine. The fuel metering unit is bolted directly to the pump body.

  3. Clean the Area

Thoroughly clean the area around the fuel metering unit to ensure no dirt or debris enters the high-pressure fuel system during removal.

  4. Remove the Faulty Unit

Disconnect the electrical connector from the fuel metering unit. Remove the mounting fasteners and carefully pull the unit out of the pump housing.

  5. Install the New Unit

Lubricate the O-rings on the new fuel metering unit with clean diesel fuel or the specified assembly grease (e.g., Case IH Akcela Moly Grease). Insert the new unit into the pump and torque the fasteners to OEM specifications.

  6. Reassembly

Reconnect the electrical connector and reconnect the battery.

  7. Clear Codes and Test

Connect the EST to clear the F-1442-04 / 3912 fault code. Start the engine, check for fuel leaks, and verify that the engine can reach rated RPM without power loss or returning to a low-idle state.
