F-1443-04 - ECU

Case IH F-1443-04 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Fuel metering unit is shorted to ground at the low side

Issue description

The Fuel Metering Unit (also known as a Fuel Control Actuator, FCA, MPROP, or Suction Control Valve) is an electronically controlled electromagnetic solenoid valve mounted directly on the high-pressure fuel injection pump. It regulates the volume of diesel fuel entering the high-pressure pump. The "low side" refers to the ground-control circuit managed by the computer. A "short to ground" means the electrical current is bypassing its intended path and going straight to the chassis/ground. This prevents the ECU from properly pulsing the valve, which can result in the valve defaulting to an incorrect position, causing severe fuel pressure deviations, engine power loss, or stalling.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Case IH Magnum AFS Connect Series
  • Case IH 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines
  • Case IH Steiger Series
  • Case IH MX Series (e.g., MX215, MX245, MX275)

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Inspect the engine wiring harness connecting the Engine ECU to the Fuel Metering Unit. Look for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or areas where the harness may be rubbing against the engine block or chassis.

  2. Harness Continuity Test: Disconnect the electrical connector at the Fuel Metering Unit and the corresponding connector at the Engine ECU. Using a digital multimeter, measure the resistance between the low-side signal wire and a known good chassis ground. If there is continuity, the wiring harness is shorted to ground and must be repaired.

  3. Component Short Test: Test the Fuel Metering Unit solenoid itself for an internal short. Measure the resistance between the low-side pin on the actuator and the metal housing of the valve. If there is continuity, the actuator has failed internally.

  4. Pin Inspection: Check the ECU and actuator connector pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or bent pins that could be bridging the circuit to a ground source.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the chafed or damaged section of the wiring harness identified during diagnostics.

If the wiring harness is at fault

  2. Cut out the damaged wire and repair it using proper automotive-grade splicing techniques and weather-sealed heat shrink.

If the wiring harness is at fault

  3. Reroute or secure the harness with zip-ties or loom to prevent future rubbing against grounded metal components.

If the wiring harness is at fault

  4. Thoroughly clean the exterior of the high-pressure fuel pump and the surrounding area to prevent dirt from entering the open fuel system.

If the Fuel Metering Unit is internally shorted

  5. Disconnect the electrical connector from the Fuel Metering Unit.

If the Fuel Metering Unit is internally shorted

  6. Remove the mounting fasteners (usually Torx or Allen screws) securing the unit to the high-pressure injection pump.

If the Fuel Metering Unit is internally shorted

  7. Carefully pull the old Fuel Metering Unit straight out of the pump housing.

If the Fuel Metering Unit is internally shorted

  8. Lubricate the O-rings on the new Fuel Metering Unit with clean diesel fuel to prevent tearing during installation.

If the Fuel Metering Unit is internally shorted

  9. Insert the new unit into the pump housing and torque the mounting screws to the manufacturer's specifications.

If the Fuel Metering Unit is internally shorted

  10. Reconnect the electrical connector.

If the Fuel Metering Unit is internally shorted

  11. Reconnect the battery, clear the fault codes using a diagnostic service tool, and run the engine to verify the repair and check for fuel leaks.

If the Fuel Metering Unit is internally shorted
