F-152-31 - ECU

Case IH F-152-31 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): ECU internal failure - Software resets in DSM 1

Issue description

The engine control module experienced an unexpected software reset, power interruption, or memory access failure during its boot-up sequence or normal operation. It is a defensive fault logged when the ECU cannot complete its initialization due to external electrical interference or an internal hardware/software failure.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines (7240, 8240, 9240)
  • Austoft 9900 Sugarcane Harvesters
  • Magnum series (180 through 380)
  • Steiger series (370 through 620)

Check the cause

  1. Check battery voltage and look for voltage drops during engine cranking that can interrupt ECU initialization

  2. Inspect the ECU wiring harness and main connectors (e.g., EDC7 connectors) for corrosion, moisture, or loose pins

  3. Disconnect any aftermarket monitors, tuning chips, or external CAN bus devices that might interfere with initialization

  4. Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check for related internal failure codes (e.g., F-152-11 or F-251-31)

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Clean and Secure

Clean all main engine ground connections and ensure the ECU harness connectors are firmly seated.

  3. Clear and Retest

Reconnect the battery, connect the EST diagnostic tool, and clear the fault codes. Cycle the key and start the engine.

  4. Replace the ECU

If code F-152-31 returns immediately upon key-on or engine cranking, the ECU has suffered an internal failure and must be replaced.

  5. Physical Replacement

Disconnect the electrical couplings from the ECU. Remove the mounting bolts securing the ECU to the engine block/mounting bracket. Install the new ECU and torque the bolts to OEM spec.

  6. Programming

The new ECU will be blank or locked. An authorized Case IH dealer must use the EST software to flash the correct engine calibration and machine software onto the new module.
