F-153-00 - ECU

Case IH F-153-00 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Crankcase pressure too high for too long

Issue description

The engine's internal crankcase pressure has exceeded the maximum allowable threshold for an extended duration, which can lead to blown seals, oil leaks, or catastrophic engine failure. The ECU will typically trigger a red warning lamp, an audible alarm, and may automatically derate the engine (limiting it to 1200 RPM) or force it to low idle.

Check the cause

  1. Check the Crankcase Breather/Filter: Inspect the filter and the breather tube for blockages, ice, or sludge.

  2. Inspect Sensor Wiring: Check the 3-pin connector and wiring harness leading to the crankcase pressure sensor for chafing, corrosion, or short circuits.

  3. Verify Actual Pressure: Use a mechanical gauge to verify if the crankcase pressure is actually high. If mechanical pressure is normal but the ECU reads high, the sensor is likely faulty.

  4. Check for Blow-by: Check for excessive blow-by from worn piston rings or cylinder liners, and check for fuel in the oil.

Repair steps

  1. Clear Blockages

If the crankcase breather filter is clogged, replace the breather element and clear any obstructions in the ventilation tubes.

  2. Replace the Sensor

If the sensor is faulty, locate the crankcase pressure sensor on the engine block. Disconnect the 3-pin electrical connector, unthread the old sensor, and clean the mounting port. Install the new sensor and torque to OEM specifications, then reconnect the wiring harness.

  3. Clear Codes

Use the Case IH diagnostic tool (EST) to clear the F-153-00 / 3962 fault code from the ECU.

  4. Test Run

Start the engine and run it up to operating temperature. Monitor the crankcase pressure via the diagnostic screen to ensure it remains within the normal range under load.
