F-153-17 - ECU

Case IH F-153-17 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Crankcase pressure too high and oil pressure too low - Fuel in oil suspected

Issue description

The ECU triggers this code when it detects a drop in engine oil pressure (caused by low oil viscosity) occurring alongside elevated crankcase pressure. This correlation strongly indicates that diesel fuel is leaking into the engine oil sump, diluting the oil and reducing its ability to maintain proper pressure.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Case IH 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines (7240, 8240, 9240)
  • Case IH Tractors (Steiger, Magnum, Optum, Puma, Farmall)
  • Case Construction Equipment (N Series Loaders, SR/TV series track loaders)

Check the cause

  1. Check the engine oil level using the dipstick. If the level has inexplicably risen above the 'Full' mark and the oil feels excessively thin or smells heavily of diesel fuel, fuel dilution is confirmed.

  2. Observe the exhaust for abnormal smoke and monitor the engine for a loss of power output, which could indicate cracked piston rings allowing blow-by.

  3. Inspect the common rail fuel system for internal leakages. Check for leaking fuel injectors, leaking injector return lines (often located under the valve cover), or a failed seal on the high-pressure fuel pump.

Repair steps

  1. Identify and Repair the Leak

Based on the diagnostic checks, locate the source of the fuel leak within the common rail system (e.g., replace the faulty fuel injector, high-pressure pump, or leaking return line).

  2. Drain the Contaminated Oil

Completely drain the fuel-diluted engine oil from the oil pan.

  3. Replace the Oil Filter

Remove and discard the old engine oil filter.

  4. Refill Engine Oil

Refill the engine crankcase with the manufacturer-specified grade and capacity of fresh engine oil.

  5. Clear Codes and Test

Clear the F-153-17 / SPN 153 FMI 17 fault code from the ECU. Run the engine to operating temperature to verify that oil pressure returns to normal, crankcase pressure stabilizes, and no further fuel leaks occur.

Parts you might need

(5)
  • Engine Oil

Generic, refer to operator's manual for specific viscosity and capacity

  • Engine Oil Filter
