F-1648-12 - ECU

Case IH F-1648-12 - ECU – Engine Control Module (ECM): ECU internal failure - 'WDA active' reported due to errors in query/response communication

Issue description

A fatal internal hardware or software failure within the control module where internal Level 2/3 monitoring has detected a breakdown in its internal query/response communication, triggering a 'WDA active' (Watchdog Active) fail-safe state.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Case IH Steiger Tractors
  • Case IH Farmall Tractors (40, 45, 50 CVT)
  • Case IH 240 Series Combines
  • Case IH SR175 Skid Steer Loaders
  • TC5090 Combines

Check the cause

  1. Connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST), clear the fault code, cycle the key, and restart the engine to check if it was a temporary internal SPI error.

  2. Check the machine's battery voltage and the wiring harness supplying power and ground to the ECM, as unstable power can trigger internal ECU faults.

  3. Ensure the ECM connectors are secure, fully seated, and free of moisture or corrosion.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Locate ECM

Locate the Engine Control Module (ECM) on the engine block or firewall.

  3. Disconnect ECM connectors

Carefully release the locking levers on the wiring harness connectors and unplug them from the ECM.

  4. Remove ECM

Remove the mounting bolts securing the ECM to its bracket and remove the defective unit.

  5. Install replacement ECM

Install the replacement ECM and tighten the mounting bolts.

  6. Reconnect ECM connectors

Reconnect the wiring harness connectors, ensuring the locking levers are fully seated.

  7. Reconnect battery

    Reconnect the negative battery cable.

  8. Program ECM

Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST). You must flash the correct dataset/calibration for the specific machine and follow the appropriate service tool procedure to 'Restore Self Learning Parameters'.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Engine Control Module (ECM)

A used or blank ECM will not work plug-and-play. The replacement module must be programmed by an authorized dealer with the specific dataset for the machine's exact build.
