F-175-31 - ECU

Case IH F-175-31 - ECU – ECU: Torque limitation due to excessive oil temperature

Issue description

This fault code indicates that the engine oil temperature has exceeded the maximum safe operating threshold. In response, the system actively limits the engine's torque output (engine derate) to protect the engine components from catastrophic failure or severe wear.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Magnum 340
  • Magnum 380
  • Magnum 400
  • Steiger
  • Quadtrac
  • 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines
  • Maxxum
  • MXM120
  • MXM155
  • MXM190

Check the cause

  1. Check engine oil level and quality to verify it is at the correct level and not degraded or contaminated

  2. Inspect the cooling system by checking coolant level, cooling fan operation, and ensuring radiator and oil cooler fins are free of debris

  3. Inspect the oil cooler and piping for blocked piping or restrictions in the oil system

  4. Test the Engine Oil Temperature (EOT) Sensor by comparing its reading with the Coolant Temperature sensor for plausibility, and test its resistance with a multimeter

Repair steps

  1. Turn off ignition

Turn the ignition off and disconnect the engine electrical power.

  2. Locate sensor

Locate the Engine Oil Temperature Sensor on the engine block/oil filter housing.

  3. Disconnect harness

Disconnect the engine wiring harness connector from the sensor.

  4. Remove sensor

Remove the faulty sensor. Be prepared to catch a small amount of residual oil.

  5. Install new sensor

Install the new Engine Oil Temperature Sensor with a new gasket/seal. Torque to the manufacturer's specifications.

  6. Reconnect harness

Reconnect the wiring harness to the sensor.

  7. Service oil cooler

If the sensor was functioning correctly but the oil was genuinely overheating, you must service the engine oil cooler (clean or replace) and resolve any primary cooling system blockages.

  8. Clear codes and test

Clear the fault codes from the ECU and perform an engine operational check under load to verify that the oil temperature remains within the normal operating range.
