Case IH F-2795-09 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): CAN timeout error from eVGT Actuator

Issue description

The engine's control module has lost communication with the electronic Variable Geometry Turbocharger (eVGT) actuator over the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. The actuator is either not receiving messages, has lost power, or its internal CAN controller has failed, preventing it from reporting its status to the main system.

Check the cause

  1. Verify Active Faults: Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to verify if F-2795-09 is currently active.

  2. Check for Related Codes: Look for other active faults related to the CAN bus network, boost pressure sensors, or system voltage. If general CAN bus or voltage errors are present, diagnose those first, as they can trigger a false eVGT timeout.

  3. Inspect the Power Supply: Check the specific fuse dedicated to the eVGT actuator to ensure it has not blown due to a short circuit.

  4. Harness & Connector Inspection: Visually inspect the wiring harness between the ECU and the eVGT actuator. Look for disconnected cables, broken wires, or melted insulation.

  5. Electrical Testing: Verify that the eVGT actuator is receiving proper operating voltage and ground. Undervoltage will cause the actuator to drop off the CAN network. Test the CAN High and CAN Low wires for continuity between the ECU and the actuator, and check for short circuits to ground or power.

  1. Repair Wiring/Fuses

    If the diagnostic checks reveal a blown fuse, replace it. If the wiring harness is broken or shorted, repair or replace the damaged section of the harness and ensure all connector pins are clean and tight.

  4. ECU Replacement (Worst Case)

    If a new actuator does not restore communication, the ECU itself may have a faulty CAN transceiver and will need to be replaced.

  5. Clear Codes

    After repairs are made, use the EST to clear the fault codes and run the engine to verify proper turbocharger operation and ensure the code does not return.
