F-2798-03 - ECU

Case IH F-2798-03 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU A-095): Injection bank 2 short circuit failure

Issue description

There is a general short circuit on the injection cable for Bank 2. Because the injectors on this bank share a common power or ground circuit, a short in one injector or the shared wiring harness can affect all injectors on that same bank, potentially causing a loss of engine power or forcing the engine into a derated 'low idle' emergency state.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines (7240, 8240, 9240)
  • Magnum Series (MX210, MX230, MX255, MX285, and Series 4 235–340)
  • STX Steiger Series (350 to 600 HP)

Check the cause

  1. Check for individual injector faults (e.g., codes 3083, 3075, 3067) which must be resolved first, as a single shorted injector will trigger the entire Bank 2 fault.

  2. Inspect the engine wiring harnesses and connectors for damaged, bent, or dislocated pins, corroded terminals, or broken wires. Flex the involved harnesses while operating to reveal intermittent breaks or shorts.

  3. Verify that no external power supplies are improperly connected, and check the charging system and solenoids for faults that could cause voltage spikes.

  4. Check the ECU A-095 to ensure it has the most up-to-date software if no individual injector faults are present and wiring is intact.

Repair steps

  1. Resolve Cylinder-Specific Shorts

If an individual injector code (e.g., Cylinder 4, 5, or 6) was found during diagnostics, disconnect that specific injector. Test the resistance of the injector to confirm if it is internally shorted. Replace the faulty injector if it fails the resistance test.

  2. Repair Harness

If the visual inspection revealed chafed wires or corroded pins on the Bank 2 injection cable, repair or replace the damaged section of the wiring harness. Ensure all connectors are completely seated and locked.

  3. Re-flash the ECU

If neither individual injector faults nor wiring issues are found, the issue may be a software logic error. Re-flash the ECU A-095 with the appropriate, updated software version using the dealer diagnostic tool.

  4. Clear Codes and Test

After repairs or software updates, clear the fault codes. Run the engine and verify that fault 3218 (DTC 7216) has been resolved.
