Case IH F-3216-14 - ECU – ECM / ACM: NOx Sensor Up Stream - Sensor value implausible as compared to the software model

Issue description

The upstream Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) sensor is providing a reading that drifts or deviates significantly from the expected values generated by the engine's software model, or the sensor has failed its internal self-diagnostic checks.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connector for the upstream NOx sensor for short circuits to ground or power, and verify battery voltage (high resistance or voltage drops can cause communication errors).

  2. Check for exhaust leaks upstream of the NOx sensor, as unmetered air entering the exhaust stream can skew sensor readings and cause the implausible value error.

  3. Verify if there are any pending software updates for the ECM/ACM, as the sensor is compared to a software model which may require recalibration.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off machine and disconnect battery

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate upstream NOx sensor

    Locate the upstream NOx sensor on the exhaust pipe, positioned just before the inlet of the SCR catalytic converter.

  3. Disconnect electrical connector

    Disconnect the electrical connector for the NOx sensor control module.

  4. Unscrew sensor probe

    Carefully unscrew the sensor probe from the exhaust pipe.

  5. Install new NOx sensor

    Install the new NOx sensor into the exhaust pipe (thread size is typically M20 x 1.5).

  6. Mount control module and route cable

    Mount the sensor's control module securely and route the cable (typically ~608mm to 615mm long) away from extreme heat sources.

  7. Reconnect connector and battery

    Reconnect the electrical connector and the machine's battery.

  8. Clear fault code

    Use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the F-3216-14 fault code from the ECM/ACM.

  9. Perform SCR system test

    Run the machine and perform an SCR system test or regeneration to verify the new sensor is reading correctly and the code does not return.
