Case IH F-3597-03 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): ECU 5 volt supply voltage is higher than expected

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) provides a constant 5-volt reference signal to power various engine sensors. This code triggers when the ECU detects that the voltage on this 5V supply circuit is higher than the calibrated limit. This typically indicates a short to battery voltage (12V) in the wiring harness, an internally shorted sensor back-feeding voltage into the 5V line, or an internal failure of the ECU's 5V regulator.

   Check system voltage: Verify the battery voltage and alternator regulator output to ensure the machine is not overcharging the system.

   Perform a sensor isolation test: Turn the ignition OFF. Disconnect the sensors that operate on the 5-volt reference circuit one at a time (e.g., fuel pressure, crankcase pressure, intake manifold pressure, and exhaust gas temperature sensors).

   Monitor the code: Turn the ignition ON (engine OFF) after disconnecting a sensor. If the F-3597-03 code becomes inactive (or changes to a voltage below normal code), the disconnected sensor is internally shorted and is the root cause.

   Inspect the harness: If all 5V sensors are disconnected and the fault remains active, inspect the engine wiring harness and ECU connectors for bent, spread, or corroded pins. Test the 5V supply wire for a short to a 12V power source.

   Verify the ECU: If the wiring harness tests good and no sensors are shorted, the ECU's internal 5V regulator has likely failed.

   Turn off the machine

   Disconnect the battery ground if repairing the wiring harness or replacing the ECU.

   Replace the faulty component

   If a sensor failed: Replace the specific shorted sensor and reconnect the harness. If the harness failed: Repair the short-to-battery in the wiring harness or replace the affected harness section. If the ECU failed: Remove the faulty ECU and install the replacement module.

   Re-establish Connections

   Reconnect all sensors and the main OEM ECU connectors.

   Clear and Validate

   Turn the key switch ON, clear the inactive fault codes using a diagnostic service tool, and start the engine. Let it idle for at least 1 minute to verify the fault code does not return and remains INACTIVE.
