Case IH F-3597-04 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Engine Control Module (ECM): ECU Power Output Supply Voltage #1 - Voltage Below Normal, Or Shorted To Low Source
Issue description
The internal 5-volt reference supply voltage generated by the ECU has dropped below the normal operating threshold or is shorted to ground. This 5-volt circuit is critical because it provides the reference voltage to various intelligent devices and engine/aftertreatment sensors.

Check the cause
Check the main battery supply voltage to the ECU. An unusually weak battery or low input voltage to the ECU can cause the module to output a weak 5-volt reference signal.
Inspect the engine wiring harness for a short circuit to ground on the 5-volt supply line.
Check the pins of the ECU connector and sensor connectors to ensure they are not loosened, corroded, or damaged.
Isolate the sensors on the 5-volt reference circuit (such as the urea pressure sensor, pre-catalyst temperature sensor, or DPF differential pressure sensor). Disconnect them one by one and measure the voltage at the ECU pins. If the voltage returns to the normal 4.8V - 5.1V threshold when a specific sensor is unplugged, that sensor is internally shorted and pulling the entire circuit down.
Repair steps
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery power.
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery power.
Replace the faulty sensor.
If the diagnostic checks reveal that a specific sensor (e.g., urea pressure sensor) is internally shorted, replace the faulty sensor.
Repair or replace the wiring harness.
If the wiring harness is found to be shorted to ground, locate the damaged section. Repair the wires using approved splice methods or replace the affected harness section.
Replace the Engine Control Unit (ECU).
If the harness and all sensors test good, but the ECU's internal 5-volt supply is still failing to output the correct voltage, the ECU's internal power stage is defective. You must replace the Engine Control Unit (ECU).
Clear fault codes and verify repair.
Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition on, and use a diagnostic service tool to clear the fault codes. Run the machine to verify that the 5-volt supply voltage is restored and the code does not return.
