F-3607-14 - ECU

Case IH F-3607-14 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): ECU internal failure - Engine speed limitation via fuel injection cut off is active.

Issue description

Informational code (Level 2 monitoring) indicating that the engine control system has actively intervened to limit the engine speed to a controllable range by cutting off fuel injection. This is a protective derate measure triggered by a different primary fault.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Case IH Magnum AFS Connect tractors
  • Case IH 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines
  • Case IH N-Series Loader Backhoes
  • Case IH Wheel Loaders 1021F, 1121F, 721F
  • Case IH Crawler Dozers 1150K, 1650L
  • Case IH Backhoes 580SN
  • Case IH Steiger and Quadtrac 450, 500, 550, 600
  • Case IH Magnum 250
  • Case IH Optum
  • Case IH Puma
  • Case IH Steiger

Check the cause

  1. Do not immediately assume the ECU is defective, as this is an informational code.

  2. Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and check the ECU failure memory for other active lead failures (primary DTCs).

  3. Look for primary faults related to engine overspeed, turbocharger overboost, critical coolant/oil temperatures, or exhaust gas/DEF system failures that would command an engine shutdown or derate.

Repair steps

  1. Connect Diagnostic Tool

Hook up the CNH EST (Electronic Service Tool) to the machine's diagnostic port.

  2. Read All Codes

Pull all active and stored fault codes from the Engine Control Unit (ECU).

  3. Identify the Lead Fault

Locate the primary fault code that triggered the engine protection mode (the injection cut-off demand). OEM manuals state that F-3607-14 should always appear in failure memory with another lead failure from ECM.

  4. Repair the Root Cause

Follow the diagnostic and repair procedure for the primary fault code (e.g., replacing a faulty temperature sensor, clearing a blocked intake, or fixing a turbocharger issue).

  5. Clear the Memory

Once the primary issue is resolved, clear the fault memory. The F-3607-14 code will clear automatically because the engine speed limitation is no longer being requested by the shut-off coordinator.
