Case IH F-4076-01 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor voltage is lower than expected

Issue description

The control module is receiving a signal voltage from the thermistor that has dropped below the minimum acceptable operating threshold. This condition is almost always caused by a short circuit to ground in the sensor wiring, a completely failed sensor, or an internal ECU fault.

Check the cause

  1. Check if other 5V reference sensors (like oil pressure or intake manifold temperature) are also throwing low-voltage codes to rule out a shared ground fault or failing 5V power supply.

  2. Inspect the ECT sensor wiring harness and connector pins for chafing, melted insulation, moisture, or corrosion that could cause a short to ground.

  3. Disconnect the ECT sensor, turn the ignition ON (engine OFF), and measure the reference voltage at the harness connector to ensure the ECU is sending the proper voltage (typically 5V).

  4. Measure the internal resistance of the sensor using a multimeter at known temperatures (e.g., 20°C and 80°C) and compare the readings to OEM specifications to confirm if the sensor has failed.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

    Ensure the machine is parked on level ground, the engine is turned off, and the cooling system is completely depressurized and cool to avoid severe burns.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the Engine Coolant Temperature sensor, which is typically threaded into the engine cylinder head, engine block, or near the thermostat housing.

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical wiring harness connector from the sensor.

  4. Prepare for Coolant Loss

    Place a clean catch pan under the engine to catch any escaping coolant.

  5. Remove the Sensor

    Using a deep socket or wrench, carefully unscrew and remove the faulty sensor.

  6. Install the New Sensor

    Thread the new OEM replacement sensor into the port. (Note: If the sensor does not have pre-applied thread sealant, apply a liquid thread sealant or Teflon tape to prevent leaks). Tighten to the manufacturer's specified torque.

  7. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical connector back into the new sensor.

  8. Refill and Test

    Top off the engine coolant to the proper level. Start the engine, verify the temperature reading on the cab monitor, check the sensor area for leaks, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the fault code from the ECU.
