Case IH F-4207-31 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): CAN communication failure between vehicle controller and ECU controller - TSC1_VE message

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has timed out or failed to receive the expected TSC1_VE (Torque/Speed Control) CAN message from the main vehicle controller. This indicates a breakdown in the Controller Area Network (CAN) communication bus, either due to wiring issues, power supply loss to the ECU, a failed termination resistor, or a software/hardware failure in the module itself.

Check the cause

  1. Check for multiple codes: If logged during programming, clear codes and retest. Troubleshoot entire CAN bus if other CAN codes are present.

  2. Visually inspect wiring and connectors between the vehicle controller and the ECU for broken locks, bent pins, corrosion, or broken wires.

  3. Check ECU supply voltage: Disconnect vehicle harness and check pins 1, 25, 26, and 49 to chassis ground for system voltage (12.0V or 24.0V) with key ON.

  4. Check CAN termination resistance: Disconnect engine harness, key OFF, and measure resistance across CAN High and Low (e.g., pins 17 and 18). Must be exactly 120 Ω. Wiggle harness to check for intermittent breaks.

  5. Check for shorts to ground: Measure continuity between CAN pins and chassis ground (should be NO continuity).

Repair steps

  1. Repair Wiring/Connectors

    If damaged wiring or broken connector locks are found during the visual inspection, repair the damaged wiring or replace the connector housings/terminals. Retest the circuit.

  2. Restore Power

    If the ECU supply voltage checks fail, trace the electrical schematics to locate the open circuit or blown fuse and restore supply power to the ECU.

  3. Restore CAN Termination

    If the CAN resistance is not 120 Ω, or if one of the conductors is grounded, locate and replace the faulty CAN termination resistor or repair the shorted CAN bus wires.

  4. Software Flash

    If the measured resistances and voltages are correct, and neither conductor is grounded, check the ECU for the appropriate software version. Re-flash the ECU using the Electronic Service Tool (EST) if necessary.

  5. Replace ECU

    If all wiring, power, ground, and termination resistor checks pass, and a software re-flash does not resolve the issue, the ECU has suffered an internal hardware failure and must be replaced.

  6. Clear and Retest

    After repairs, clear the fault codes from the modules and operate the machine to verify the F-4207-31 code does not return.
