Case IH F-4360-02 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): SCR Temperature Sensor Plausibility Failure

Issue description

The ECU has detected that the temperature reading from the downstream SCR temperature sensor does not match the calculated temperature value expected by the ECU's internal model. The sensor's data is flagged as erratic, intermittent, or incorrect because the temperature reading is not changing in accordance with current engine operating conditions.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the SCR temperature sensor wiring harness and connectors for physical damage, chafing, or melted wires.

  2. Disconnect the sensor and inspect the pins for oxidation, corrosion, or pin push-out. Verify the 5-volt supply and common ground to the ECU with a multimeter.

  3. Inspect the exhaust system upstream of the SCR catalyst for leaks, which can cause actual temperatures to drop and trigger a plausibility mismatch.

  4. Connect a diagnostic scan tool and monitor the live data for the SCR temperature sensor. On a cold engine, it should match ambient temperature. As the engine warms up, the temperature should rise smoothly without dropping out or spiking erratically.

  5. Look for other active fault codes related to the DEF/AdBlue dosing system, DOC (Diesel Oxidation Catalyst), or ECU power supply, which could be the root cause of the temperature mismatch.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the engine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery

    to prevent electrical shorts and ECU damage.

  2. Allow the exhaust aftertreatment system to cool completely

    as the SCR chamber operates at extremely high temperatures.

  3. Locate the downstream SCR temperature sensor

    on the exhaust aftertreatment assembly.

  4. Disconnect the electrical connector

    from the sensor harness.

  5. Apply penetrating oil to the threads of the sensor

    and allow it to sit for a few minutes to prevent thread galling.

  6. Carefully unscrew and remove the sensor

    from the exhaust pipe using an appropriate wrench or sensor socket.

  7. Apply a small amount of anti-seize compound to the threads of the new sensor

    (if not already pre-applied by the manufacturer). Do not get anti-seize on the sensor probe tip.

  8. Install the new SCR temperature sensor

    and tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque.

  9. Reconnect the electrical connector

    ensuring the locking tab clicks securely into place.

  10. Reconnect the battery

  11. Connect a diagnostic scan tool, clear the inactive F-4360-02 fault code, and perform a test drive or a forced stationary regeneration

    to verify that the sensor reads correctly and the code does not return.
