Case IH F-4376-02 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU) or Dosing Control Unit (DCU): DEF/AdBlue dosing system backflow line pressure too high plausibility failure.

Issue description

The system has detected that the pressure in the DEF return (backflow) line is higher than the expected threshold. During normal operation or the after-run purge cycle, the DEF supply module reversing valve activates. If the system cannot relieve pressure, it indicates a restriction in the return line to the tank, a frozen/crystallized line, or a mechanical failure of the reversing valve inside the DEF supply module.

Check the cause

  1. Wait for the purge cycle: Turn the key off and listen to the DEF pump. It should run for 60–90 seconds. If it sounds like it is deadheading or fails to build/release pressure, the reversing valve may be stuck.

  2. Visual line inspection: Trace the DEF return line from the supply module to the DEF tank. Look for physical damage, kinks, or pinched sections that would restrict flow.

  3. Check for crystallization: Disconnect the return line and check the fittings at the tank and the pump for white, chalky urea buildup.

  4. Check line heaters: If operating in freezing temperatures, verify that the DEF backflow line heater is functioning (a failed heater often triggers SPN 4342 / 4345 codes).

  5. Check tank venting: Ensure the DEF tank breather/vent is not clogged, which can create pressure imbalances in the system.

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize the System

    Turn off the ignition and wait at least 2 minutes for the ECU to complete the DEF purge cycle and power down. Do not disconnect lines while the system is pressurized.

  2. Disconnect the Return Line

    Remove the AdBlue/DEF return line from the DEF supply module (doser pump) and the DEF tank. Cap the module ports immediately to prevent dirt ingress.

  3. Clear the Restriction

    Flush the return line with warm distilled water to dissolve any crystallized DEF. Blow low-pressure compressed air through the line to verify it is clear.

  4. Replace the Line (If Necessary)

    If the line is permanently kinked, damaged, or the internal heater is shorted/open, replace the entire DEF return line assembly.

  5. Replace the Supply Module (If Line is Clear)

    If the return line is completely clear but the F-4376-02 code persists, the reversing valve inside the DEF supply module has failed mechanically. The module cannot be rebuilt and must be replaced.

  6. Reassembly and Testing

    Reconnect all lines. Clear the fault codes using a diagnostic scan tool (like CNH EST). Run a DEF system leak test or dosing test via the software to verify the pressure stabilizes correctly.
