Case IH F-4376-06 - ECU – DCU (Dosing Control Unit): DEF/AdBlue reverting valve ECU driver circuit over temperature failure.

Issue description

The reverting valve (a 4-way/2-position valve) is located inside the DEF Supply Module (DEF pump). Its primary function is to reverse the flow of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) when the engine is shut down, purging the fluid from the lines back into the tank to prevent freezing and crystallization. This fault code triggers when the driver circuit inside the control module that commands the reverting valve overheats. This overheating is almost always caused by excessive electrical current draw, which typically stems from a short circuit to ground in the wiring harness, an internal short within the reverting valve's electrical coil, or a failing driver inside the control module itself.

Check the cause

  1. Turn off the ignition switch and disconnect the battery if necessary

  2. Disconnect the harness at the DCU and the DEF Supply Module and inspect the connectors for pushed pins, corrosion, or signs of melting/overheating

  3. Test the reverting valve power supply and ground circuits between the DCU and the DEF Supply Module for an open circuit, high resistance, or a short circuit to ground

  4. Measure the resistance of the reverting valve coil directly at the DEF Supply Module pins to check for an internal short (root cause of excessive current draw)

  5. Check the DCU pins for a burnt smell or localized melting, which indicates the internal driver has already suffered permanent thermal damage

Repair steps

  1. Resolve Wiring Issues

    If the diagnostic checks reveal a short to ground in the machine's wiring harness, repair or replace the affected harness section.

  2. Replace the DEF Supply Module

    If the reverting valve coil is internally shorted, the entire DEF Supply Module must be replaced. The reverting valve is an integrated component of the pump and is not serviced separately.

  3. Replace the DCU (if necessary)

    If the wiring and the DEF Supply Module test perfectly fine, or if a shorted reverting valve was replaced but the code immediately returns, the DCU's internal driver has been permanently damaged by the heat. The DCU will need to be replaced and flashed/programmed by a dealer.

  4. Clear and Verify

    Reconnect all components, turn the ignition ON (without starting the engine), and use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the DTCs. Run the engine, allow it to reach operating temperature, and perform a key-off cycle to force the system into a purge state. Verify the reverting valve operates and the code does not return.
