Case IH F-4383-12 - ECU – Engine Control Module (ECM) / EDC17CV41: NH3 Sensor - Internal sensor heater supply failure / Bad intelligent device
Issue description
The NH3 (Ammonia) sensor relies on an internal heater to reach operating temperature. This code triggers when the CAN communication monitoring detects that the NH3 sensor is reporting an internal error related to the power supply of its heater or the sensor itself.
Applies to these machines
7 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Case IH 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines
- Case IH Maxxum (e.g., 115 CVT)
- Case IH Magnum
- Case IH Steiger series tractors
- Case IH Farmall series (e.g., 110U, 35C)
- Case CE 580N Backhoe Loaders
Check the cause
Check the physical presence and correct connection of the NH3 sensor to the exhaust network
Inspect the wiring harness for short circuits, open circuits, or high resistance. Look for chafed wires or corroded pins at the sensor connector
Check the correct functioning of the Sensor CAN controller and its voltage supply. Verify battery voltage and alternator output, as abnormal voltage drops (especially during cold starts) can trigger heater supply faults
Verify the CAN configuration and ensure there are no communication timeout errors on the network
Repair steps
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery
Ensure the exhaust system is safe to work on and the ECU is powered down.
Locate the NH3 sensor
Find it on the exhaust aftertreatment system (typically mounted downstream on the SCR muffler/catalyst).
Disconnect the electrical connector
Disconnect it from the NH3 sensor.
Carefully unscrew the NH3 sensor from the exhaust pipe
Note: Exhaust sensors can seize; penetrating oil may be required.
Install the new OEM NH3 sensor
Torque it to the manufacturer's specification.
Reconnect the electrical harness
Reconnect the battery, connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST), and clear the inactive fault codes
Run the engine to operating temperature
Verify the sensor heater activates and the code does not return.
