Case IH F-518-14 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Torque limitation caused by engine brake active

An informational/event code indicating that the engine control system has actively reduced engine power (torque limitation) because the engine brake was engaged, or that a torque rise limitation remained active for an extended period after the engine brake was released.

   Scan for Root Codes: Connect the diagnostic tool and check the ECU for other active or stored DTCs, specifically CAN communication errors related to the engine brake (e.g., F-518249-09) or exhaust retarder faults.

   Check Operating Conditions: Verify if the machine was operating under extreme downhill loads where the engine brake was heavily applied for extended durations.

   Inspect Engine Brake Operation: Check if the engine brake or exhaust retarder is physically stuck in the engaged position after the operator releases the switch or pedal.

   Address Root Faults

   If another fault code is present (e.g., a failed engine brake solenoid or CAN bus timeout), perform the troubleshooting and repair for that specific code.

   Clear the Code

   If no other codes are present and the code was triggered by an extreme working condition (heavy engine braking event), clear the inactive code from the ECU memory using the diagnostic tool.

   Test Drive

   Operate the machine under load, engage and disengage the engine brake, and verify that full engine torque returns promptly after the engine brake is released.
