F-518146-31 - ECU

Case IH F-518146-31 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU) A-9000: ECU internal failure - SPI errors during MoCSOP execution

Issue description

Power stages, Injector: Too many SPI errors during MoCSOP execution. The Engine Control Unit (ECU) performs a series of internal 'shut-off path' tests to deactivate all power stages relevant to fuel injection if certain errors are detected. If faulty internal communication (SPI errors) is detected during this test, this fault code is logged.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Case IH Magnum AFS Connect (Tier 3)
  • Case IH 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines
  • Case N-Series TLBs
  • Boomer series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the vehicle harness and connectors (specifically connector X-9001 at the ECU A-9000) for damaged, bent, or dislocated pins

  2. Verify that there are no corroded terminals or broken wires, and ensure all connectors are completely seated and locked

  3. Flex the involved wiring harnesses while the machine is keyed on or operating to reveal any intermittent breaks or shorts in the wiring

  4. Check if the appropriate software version is currently installed on the ECU A-9000, as software corruption can trigger internal failure codes

Repair steps

  1. Repair Wiring

If any damage was found during the visual inspection or flex test, repair the damaged harness or replace the faulty connector pins. Clear the codes and retest.

  2. Re-flash the ECU

If no wiring issues are found, the fault is internal to the ECU A-9000. Connect your diagnostic tool and re-flash/update the module with the latest appropriate software.

  3. Replace the ECU

If the software update does not resolve the issue, the ECU A-9000 has suffered a hard internal hardware failure (SPI communication failure) and must be replaced.

  4. Post-Repair

After installing a new ECU, it must be programmed with the correct software payload for the specific machine model and engine configuration.
