Case IH F-518150-31 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU / EDC): ECU internal failure - Post injection shut-off failure
Issue description
This code indicates an internal hardware or software logic failure within the engine controller. Specifically, the ECU is unable to correctly command, verify, or terminate the 'post-injection' fuel event, which is typically utilized for exhaust aftertreatment processes.
Applies to these machines
7 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines (7240, 8240, 9240)
- Austoft 9900 Series Sugarcane Harvesters
- Austoft A8810 Series Sugarcane Harvesters
- Puma
- Magnum
- Steiger
Check the cause
Verify the code using the Electronic Service Tool (EST) or diagnostic screen and check for related codes like 3758.
Clear the fault code from memory and road test the vehicle under normal load to see if it resets.
Inspect the battery, alternator, and ECU wiring harness for voltage spikes, drops, or high resistance that can cause false internal defects.
Connect the EST and attempt to re-flash the ECU with the most up-to-date dataset/calibration to rule out corrupted software.
Repair steps
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical arcing.
Ensure the machine is completely powered down before beginning the ECU replacement.
Locate the Engine ECU.
It is typically mounted directly on the side of the engine block, utilizing vibration isolators.
Carefully release the locking levers on the main wiring harness connectors and unplug them from the ECU.
Ensure the connectors are fully released to avoid damaging the pins.
Remove the mounting bolts and remove the defective ECU.
Keep the mounting hardware for the replacement unit.
Install the replacement or remanufactured ECU and torque the mounting bolts to OEM spec.
Ensure the vibration isolators are properly seated.
Reconnect the wiring harnesses, ensuring the locking levers are fully seated.
Verify a secure connection to prevent future electrical faults.
Reconnect the battery.
Restore power to the machine.
Program the new ECU using the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST).
Crucial Step: A new or remanufactured ECU will be blank or locked. You must program it with the correct machine software, engine calibration dataset, and injector trim codes.
