Case IH F-518159-31 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Number of injections is limited by system

This fault occurs when the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) monitors the difference between the requested number of fuel injections and the current capability of the high-pressure fuel injection system to fulfill that request. If the difference between the requested injections and the actual injections reaches five, the fault is triggered. This is most commonly caused by a software calibration error where the dataset application is wrong and allows a too high number of injections.

   Verify that the tractor's battery power supply has not been connected to an external power supply. If an external power supply is connected, disconnect it and test the system for normal operation.

   Start the engine, run it at 2000 RPM, and check the battery voltage on the instrument cluster to rule out voltage irregularities.

   Erase the Level 2/3 error from the fault code memory. Operate the vehicle for a short distance to check if the operation point that triggered the error returns.

   Check for other specific failures related to the rail pressure controller, such as a sticking metering unit, high-pressure pump efficiency issues, rail pressure sensor failure, or an unexpected opening of the Pressure Relief Valve (PRV).

   Perform Initial Reset

   After performing the diagnostic checks, erase the fault code memory.

   Test Drive

   Drive the machine under load for a short distance.

   Evaluate ECU Replacement

   If the Level 2/3 error does not reappear, do not replace the ECU; the erasure of the fault code memory is sufficient.

   Software Update (Dataset Replacement)

   If the fault returns and no mechanical fuel pressure issues are found, the dataset should be replaced. A certified dealer technician must connect a diagnostic tool (like the CNH EST) to reflash/update the ECU with the corrected software dataset.

   Mechanical Repair

   If the fault is accompanied by rail pressure codes, diagnose and replace the faulty high-pressure fuel system component (e.g., rail pressure sensor, metering unit, or pressure relief valve) before condemning the ECU.
