F-518161-31 - ECU

Case IH F-518161-31 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): ECU Internal failure - Torque comparison fault

Issue description

This fault indicates an internal plausibility error within the engine's control module. The system detects an internal abnormality where the required engine torque exceeds the maximum allowable torque, or there is a mismatch in the torque comparison calculations. This is typically caused by an internal hardware failure within the module, a software calibration error, or poor coding data settings.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Case IH Austoft 9900 series
  • Case IH Austoft 9000 series
  • Machines equipped with the FPT Cursor 11 diesel engine

Check the cause

  1. Connect the diagnostic tool and erase the Level 2/3 error from the fault code memory.

  2. Operate the vehicle for a short distance (e.g., a few kilometers) or replicate the specific operating conditions/engine load under which the error was originally triggered.

  3. Monitor the system to see if the fault code returns.

  4. Verify if there are any incorrect coding data settings. Contact the technical helpdesk to verify if a software update or dataset replacement is required.

Repair steps

  1. Clear and Test

Clear the code and test the machine.

  2. Evaluate Transient vs. Hard Fault

If the error does NOT reappear: Do not replace the ECU. The fault was a transient anomaly, and erasure of the fault code memory is sufficient. If the error DOES reappear: Proceed to step 3.

  3. Software Reprogramming

Because the fault can be triggered by a calibration error or software glitch, attempt to reprogram/flash the ECU with the latest software dataset.

  4. ECU Replacement

If the error persists after reprogramming, or if the helpdesk confirms a hard internal hardware failure, the Engine ECU is defective and must be replaced.
