Case IH F-518217-31 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (Engine ECU): ECU internal failure - Conditions where not correct to allow starter cranking to start or to continue or maximum crank time exceeded
Issue description
The system has detected that the maximum allowable engine cranking time has been exceeded, or an internal logic failure within the module is preventing the starter from engaging or continuing to crank.
Applies to these machines
2 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Austoft 9900 Sugarcane Harvesters
Check the cause
Check the battery condition and alternator output, as voltage drops during cold starts can trigger this fault
Inspect the starting circuit wiring for high resistance or short circuits
Erase the Level 2/3 error from the fault code memory
Operate the vehicle for a short distance or attempt a standard operating cycle to see if the code returns
Repair steps
Erase fault code
Connect your diagnostic tool and erase the fault code from the ECU memory.
Test drive
Test drive the machine.
Evaluate if error reappears
If the error does NOT reappear: Do not replace the ECU. The erasure of the fault code memory is sufficient, and the fault was likely a transient voltage or cold-start anomaly.
Replace ECU if error reappears
If the error DOES reappear: The Engine ECU has suffered a hard internal failure and must be replaced.
