F-518249-09 - ECU

Case IH F-518249-09 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): CAN Bus Timeout Error of CAN-Receive-Frame Vehicle Control Module to EDC (VM2EDC)

Issue description

This code indicates a CAN communication failure between the Vehicle Control Module (VCM) and the Engine Control Unit (ECU / EDC). The ECU is not receiving expected messages (such as low/high idle or intermediate speed governor parameters) from the VCM. This is typically caused by a disconnected, broken, or short-circuited CAN bus wiring harness, a faulty VCM CAN controller, voltage supply issues, or interference from an external power supply.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Magnum 180-380
  • Magnum 400
  • Puma 165-230
  • Steiger 370-620
  • Axial-Flow Combines 240 series
  • Austoft 9900
  • Wheel Loader 1021F
  • Wheel Loader 1121F
  • Wheel Loader 721F

Check the cause

  1. Verify that the tractor's battery has not been connected to an external power supply (like a jump starter or external charger), which can cause voltage interference.

  2. Check for battery defects or alternator issues. Low voltage or high resistance during cold starts can trigger this timeout error.

  3. Disconnect the vehicle harness from the ECU (e.g., connector X-911). With the ignition switch in the ON position, use a multimeter to check for proper voltage on the vehicle harness side.

  4. Inspect the CAN bus wiring connecting the VCM to the EDC for physical breaks, disconnections, or short circuits to ground/power.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the machine's ignition and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical damage during testing.

  2. Locate Harnesses

Locate the CAN bus wiring harness running between the Vehicle Control Module (VCM) and the Engine Control Unit (ECU).

  3. Visual Inspection

Inspect the wiring and connectors at both modules for physical damage, corrosion, moisture intrusion, or backed-out pins.

  4. Continuity & Short Testing

Using a multimeter, perform a continuity test on the CAN High and CAN Low wires between the VCM and ECU. Test both wires for a short to ground or a short to voltage.

  5. Repair Wiring

If a break or short is found, repair the damaged section of the wiring harness or replace the connector pins as necessary.

  6. Test Module Power/Ground

If the CAN wiring is intact, verify that both the VCM and ECU are receiving proper power and ground.

  7. Module Replacement

If all wiring, power, and ground circuits are verified as good, the fault likely lies within the internal CAN controller of either the VCM or the ECU. Replace the faulty module as indicated by further module-specific diagnostics.

  8. Reassembly and Clearing

Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition ON, clear the inactive fault codes using a diagnostic tool, and run the machine to verify the code does not return.
