Case IH F-518302-09 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): CAN communication failure between vehicle controller and ECU controller - TSC1_PE message

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has lost communication with the Vehicle Control Module (VCM) or Central Control Unit (CCU) over the CAN bus network. Specifically, the ECU is failing to receive the expected "TSC1_PE" (Torque/Speed Control) message, or the message is timing out/corrupted.

Check the cause

  1. Verify if the fault code is currently active or stored in history.

  2. Verify that the tractor battery power supply has not been connected to an external power supply (like a jump box or external charger), as this can cause voltage spikes that disrupt CAN communication.

  3. Check the ECU A-095 supply voltage by disconnecting the vehicle (VE) harness from the ECU A-095 at connector X-911 and using a multimeter to check for proper voltage with the ignition ON.

  4. Visually inspect the CAN Node A Bus for damaged, bent, or dislocated pins, corroded terminals, or broken wires. Flex the harnesses to reveal intermittent breaks or shorts.

  5. Verify that the appropriate software version is installed on the ECU A-095.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect External Power

    If an external power supply is connected to the tractor, disconnect it immediately and test the system for normal operation.

  2. Repair Wiring

    If the visual inspection reveals damaged wiring or connectors on the CAN Node A Bus, repair or replace the affected harness sections. Ensure the connectors are fully seated and locked.

  3. Check CAN Termination

    The ECU A-095 provides an internal CAN termination resistor for the CAN Node A Bus. If the wiring is intact but communication fails, the internal resistor or the ECU's CAN transceiver may have failed.

  4. Software Flash

    If wiring and voltage are within specification, reinstall or flash the ECU A-095 software using the dealer diagnostic tool.

  5. Module Replacement

    If software flashing does not resolve the issue and the harness is confirmed good, the Engine Control Unit (ECU) must be replaced and programmed to the machine.
