F-518653-31 - ECU

Case IH F-518653-31 - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): External engine shutdown request received

Issue description

This is an informational or secondary fault code indicating that the engine did not shut down due to a primary mechanical failure within the engine itself. Instead, the Engine Control Unit (ECU) received a direct command over the CAN bus network from another module (such as the Body Computer or Vehicle Controller) instructing it to shut the engine off.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Magnum 400
  • 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines
  • 7240
  • 8240
  • 9240
  • Farmall 40
  • Farmall 45
  • Farmall 50

Check the cause

  1. Scan All Modules: Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and pull codes from the Body Computer, Vehicle Controller, and Transmission Control Unit. Look for the primary fault that triggered the safety shutdown.

  2. Check CAN Communication: Verify the CAN configuration in the Body Computer. Look for active CAN timeout errors (such as BC2ECU2 message failures or CAN A/C Bus off failures).

  3. Verify EDC Network Presence: Check the presence and correct connection of the EDC (Engine Control Unit) to the network.

Repair steps

  1. Identify the Primary Fault

Review the diagnostic scan. The repair will entirely depend on the primary code logged in the Body Computer or Vehicle Controller that requested the shutdown.

  2. Inspect the Harness

If CAN communication codes are present alongside F-518653-31, inspect the wiring harness between the ECU and the Body Computer. Look for chafed wires, pushed-out pins, or corrosion at the connectors.

  3. Resolve the Trigger Condition

Repair the primary issue (e.g., replace a faulty temperature/pressure sensor, repair the CAN bus wiring, or replace a defective safety switch).

  4. Clear Codes and Test

Once the primary fault is repaired, clear the codes from all modules.

  5. Emergency Re-start (If applicable)

If the machine is stranded in the field, some models (like the 240 Series Combines) allow an emergency re-start to move the machine. This is only enabled after the engine has been commanded to low idle and provides 30 seconds of operation before reducing to low idle again.
